Enter the Harrowing
A Side Quest of Planar Proportions

The hill giants surrendered to us and Citender told us that the town was with us.

Loot from the fort and the baroness:

  • +2 defending longsword (18,315 gp)
  • 3 mwk throwing axes (308 gp each)
  • +3 breastplate (Hawk, sell his +2 breastplate: 4,350 gp)
  • +4 belt of physical might (CON, STR) (Larken, sell his +4 STR belt: 16,000 gp)
  • rod of splendor (Liliana, sell her pink and green sphere ioun stone: 8000 gp)
  • +2 cloak of resistance (4,000 gp)
  • stone of alarm (2,700 gp)
  • diamond crown (1500 gp)
  • diamond necklace (500 gp)
  • Jewel, the annoying dog
  • royal outfit (300 gp)
  • sapphire earrings (400 gp)

THe historian Meloigne Garracy told us that he saw the armies of Armag on the march. He’s gone to the Umbra Carnival, a circus that is visiting the town, to see the All-Seeing Hajeck. Hajeck used to be seen as a charlatan, but she has gained powers after inheriting a magical item. We went to see Hajeck the next day.

Hajeck told us about the Library of Sonnorai, a place of knowledge and riches. Garracy wanted to go there. A bard from the Age of Darkness feared that her knowledge would die with her, so she formed a demiplane from the Plane of Dreams and stored her knowledge there. Hajeck offers to send us there to look for Garracy. There is a tapestry in the Library that will allow us to return to the Material Plane. She went under a strange compulsion, and said “Zassrion is at it again.” Zassrion is an ancient blue dragon and the lord of the Library. He was once a story in the mind of Sonnorai and he wants to gather souls to gain power, so he makes the possessor of Sonnorai’s harrow deck try to gather souls for him. Hajeck set her harrow deck down and a swirling portal appeared. We agreed to enter the portal, and Tal took the deck since Hajeck told us that situations in the demiplane would be reflected in the cards.

  • The Deck of Harrowed Tales (Tal)

On the other side of the portal, we appeared in a different, disused circus with slow organ music. A tinker was surounded by tengu who were being him. He called out “Help Biyo!” We came to his assistance.

Loot:

  • 6 chain shirt (100 gp each)
  • 6 mwk short swords (310 gp each)
  • 18 mwk daggers (2 to Hawk, sell other 16: 302 gp each and Hawk’s old 2 daggers: 2 gp each)

The tinker, Biyo Venna, was cooking dinner for his master, Zastrion, in the kitchen of the Striding Fortress. He told us that we will need the sacred tokens of the conspirators to gain access to the Striding Fortress. The conspirators killed Sonnorai and took parts of her body and the gemstones from her sash to gain power. The tapestry is in the fortress. Biyo wants us tosave Garresy from the dragon. There are nine reigions in the realm, one with each of the conspirators. Bernaditti, a rakshasa ringmaster, is the conspirator in charge of the Midnight Circus. Brambleson, a rabbit, lives in the Briars. Brambleson ate Sonnorai’s feet and so has wanderlust. Half of his broken sword is in Zastrion’s treasure room. Additionally, there are the Barrow King, the Mourning Choir, Marsalee the Weaver (ant queen), the Remnant of Sonnerai, Balamar and Balio (performers), the Night Peddler, and Zastrion. The regions are the Midnight Circus, Demon’s Fen (the brambles), Man Molds (the wax museum), Prophet Garden, Sanguine Playhouse, Smith’s Caldera, the Striding Fortress, and the Trackless Dearth. The gemstones will tug in the direction of the Fortress and together they can lead us to it. Algon the Wanderer sees it as his paladin destiny to defeat the dragon.

Tal deduces that on this plane time passes normally, but we will not age. It is about 80 miles across and then wraps around. There is a DC 30 caster level check for spells to leave the planes and a DC 20 caster level check to cast conjuration (summoning) spells. The plane has a mildly neutral alignment.

We went to see Bernaditti, who challenged us to a battle of wits for his token. He would ask us five questions and we had to determine which answer he gave was a lie. His stone giant Rogg came in, but the rakshasa told him to go clean. We ask questions:

1. “Where do you hide your token?”
“In my prized possession, this teacup, of course.”
2. “What body part did you take from Sonnerai?”
“The bard’s tongue, explaining why I’m so glib.”
3. “What is the name of the dragon’s cook?”
“Biyo Vinna. Pretty good cook. We’ve shared tea many times.” (We verified this with Biyo.)
4. “What is your prized possession?”
“Of course, every conspirators prized possession is his token. ut if you collect too many you will draw the ire of others.”
5. “Is your teacup your token?”
“No, of course not. The token is in the tacup. It’s a garden on a gold pendant.”

We pointed out the logical contradiction between his answers to questions 1, 4, and 5 and he admitted to having lied.

  • garnet token (1,200 gp)

We went to see Brambleson. Biyo told us that a garden path and hedge maze used to connect the realm, but it’s now a tangled briar, where we will feel lost. We found a house in the briar with a garrish red and yellow paint. The rabbi prince was arguing with his house, complaining that he couldn’t go far from home because it just followed him around. When we asked for his token, he told us that he wants to escape from the demiplane to satisfy the wanderlust, but he wants to collect the other half of his Sword of Oaths first. To win his token, he challenged one of us to single combat. Larken beat him up and Brambleson graciously declared the fight a draw, and gave us his token.

  • green feldspar token in a tiny shoe called a dancing heel

We went to the Demon’s Fen, with Barrow Island and the undead barrow wight king to the east. The Mourning Choir (a weeping coatl and a former conspirator) was on the bridge. The coatl was once known as the Radiant Sunrise, but it now sings mournful songs for Sonnerai. The wight has the bard’s heart. When we crossed the bridge, we were attacked by the coatl and the wight. After defeating them, we performed a ritual with votive candles to quiet the undead spirits.

Not-sneaking around Fort Drelev
Or, we kill a lot of people

We found a bug-out bag containing:

  • 4 vials of skunk musk (that prevents detection by black puddings)
  • 6 potions of fly (one to each of us)
  • several days worth of trail rations
  • bag of holding type I (full of a rogue’s equipment)

We came to the prison area, where we met Guy, a rogue from Zaith (whose stuff we found earlier) and Terrion. We returned Guy’s stuff to him. We found Terrion’s gear and returned it to him as well. Terrion snuck out of the fort. Searching the area, we found:

  • wine (119 bottles worth 6000 gp; Guy drank a cheap one but I don’t recall its cost)
  • 200 pp, 1986 gp, 2460 sp, 815 cp
  • 30 silver ingots with the baron’s seal (25 gp each)

Ascending the tower, we came upon and slayed two guards.

  • 2 mwk breastplates (350 gp each)
  • 2 mwk heavy steel shields (170 gp each)
  • 2 mwk composite longbows (400 gp each)
  • 2 mwk longswords (315 go each)
  • 40 arrows
  • 100 gp
  • 2 potions of cure moderate wounds (to Hawk, also one from party loot to Hawk)
  • 2 potions of shield of faith +3

We came upon the baron and his guards and attacked. Meanwhile, Guy went to the library and tried to seduce the baron’s mistress, who attacked him.

Sneaking around Fort Drelev
Or, Liberation Points point the way to liberation

Loy Resbin asks us to build a road to Wyvern Stone Bridge.

Kissandra asks us to overthrow the ruler of Drelev and save her people from the Tiger Lords. She offers us her family’s loyalty. She sketched a map of the town of Drelev and asked us to liberate the town, kill or capture Drelev, and rescue her father. Her friend Citender Morney runs the brothel in Drelev and will give us a hiding place while in town. She gives us a jade ring (200 gp) and tells us to thread a flower through it and give it to Citender as a recognition symbol.

Quanshy Villakooteer, a local taxidermist, tells us that a seamonster called an elasmosaurus lives in Lake Hooktongue. He wants to stuff one and offers us 8,000 gp if we can provide him with a corpse of one.

He also tells us that he’s heard from the captain of the guard that a sabretooth tiger named Speartooth is plaguing the lands west of the swamp. If we give the captain the teeth of Speartooth, he will reward us with 8,000 gp.

A small human called Chesk Umberwood is a local alchemist. He tells us that he promised to deliver metal-etching acid to some dwarves, but needs a dozen vials of giant slug acid to make it. If we get it for him, he promises us a dozen potions in reward.

A nobly-dressed lady approaches our table and tells Tal that she is Genevieve Kinser. She likes breeding horses and has heard of a stallion named Windchaser who lives west of the swamp. If we bring a member of his herd to her stable, she will offer us 8,000 gp. She is relocating to our capitol and is also interested in setting up races. Loy tells us that she is spoiled but rich.

We craft 5 hats of disguise in preparation for infiltrating Ft. Drelev.

  • 5 hats of disguise (-4,500 gp)

While crafting, we attempt to gather intelligence via scrying.

  1. We see Hannis Drelev in a bedchamber chasing a woman around. She is Lady Quintessa, who is not his wife. We discern that he has a +3 breastplate, a +2 defending longsword, a +4 belt of physical might (CON, STR), a +2 cloak of resistance, a +2 ring of protection, and a rod of splendor. He also carries a keyring. From our observations, we deduce that he is sullen, greedy, and jealous. He fancies himself a skilled swordsman and likes to show off. He becomes angry when others get the best of him.
  2. We see Terrion Newmesty, Kissandra’s father, in a prison cell. he is in poor health.

Kissandra warns us that the brother of Pavatta (the Baroness of Drelev) is a powerful evoker named Imecus Strune. We also heard that the Black Sisters that resurrected (maybe?) the barbarian Tiger Lord are trying to overthrow our kingdom and may be behind the cult we dealt with earlier.

Our preparations complete, we fly to Ft. Drelev on Larken’s roc, with the rest of the party stored in our portable hole. En route, we were attacked by a black dragon. During the battle, Tal lost strength after casting summon monster spells for an unknown reason. We searched for the dragon’s lair, but were unable to find it.

  • black dragon head

We made the last portion of the journey to Fort Drelev on foot. En route, we met a traveler with a cart and a mule, wearing the symbol of Kalen. He identified himself as Borsakai and told us that he is looking for dragonfly wings. If we bring 6 giant dragonfly wings, he will give us a +3 cloak of resistance.

The guards of Ft. Drelev let us in without incident, but seemed to be applying a much closer examination to those who leave the fort. Also, mercenaries from Pitaro are patrolling the streets. The local priest of the Temple of Kalen has disappeared.

In town, we heard rumors:

  1. Shipments of food arrive each week, but it goes to the mercenaries, so the townfolk are hungry.
  2. There are haunted creatures in the swamp.
  3. Baroness Pavetta is throwing a birthday bash for herself and only the wealthiest of those staying in the keep are invited.
  4. The wizard Imecus Strune has sequestered himself in the keep and is doing experiments on people.
  5. No one knows where Armag has gone. He took women hostage and marched them into the hills.

We went to meet with Citender, and gave her the ring. She aks us not to fight openly in public lest we lose support for our cause (-1 LP). However, she suggests rescuing Terrion (4 LP), killing the Baron (6 LP), killing the wizard (? LP), capturing Armag (6 LP), and killing the hill giants that patrol at night (? LP). The Baron has a secret escape tunnel from the keep to the shore of the lake. We may use the brothel as a hideout.

We got to rescue Tarrion. We sneak in using invisibility sphere and the secret entrance. However, the wizard detects us and attacks. We kill him and his dust mephit familiar.

A Threat to the West
Or, more reasons to be cross with the Lord of Pitaro

We returned to our kingdom and resumed the day-to-day work of managing it, while upgrading our gear for our next adventure. One evening, Liliana propositioned Hawk and levitated him off to her bedchamber. While they were in bed, a wakizashi struck upward through the bed and through Hawk. Liliana and Hawk proceeded to fight against the would-be assassin, but found that he was invisible. Verrak had been spying on the two of them through the keyhole to the bedchamber and so was first to arrive on the scene. He used his mighty spell-sundering power to defeat the assailants invisibility spell, while Hawk gathered his weaponry. Meanwhile, Tal had felt abnormally drowsy and gone to bed, where he had another dream of an earthquake, giants attacking a city and chasing children, a hypnotic dance that he joined, leading him to a throne with the skeletal corpse of Liliana. He awoke with a feeling of loss and, recognizing the dream as prophetic, set out to find her. At the same time, Larken was drunk down in the dining hall, but his kobold companions attempted to rouse him to battle when they heard the noises coming from Liliana’s wing. The battle fully joined, we quickly subdued the attacker.

Loot:

  • ring of protection +2 (4,000 gp)
  • cloak of resistance +2 (4,000 gp)
  • +3 padded armor (9,155 gp)
  • +2 defending wakizashi (18,335 gp)
  • 4 doses of wyvern poison (Hawk)

The assailant was a ninja, who we stripped and stone shaped into the floor of our dungeon for questioning. He told us that he was sent by his Lord Baron Harnass Drelev. The Baron had allied with Armag, prophesied by the Black Sisters as the return of the great warlord of the Age of Destiny. When no one else was looking, Larken brutally killed him. Meanwhile, the Beldame contacted us and told us that Loy Resbin of Tazlford had sent us a message, warning of armies of bandits to the west in Hooktongue Slough that were marching on them.

We teleported to Tazlford and went to see Resbin and his wife, Latricia Evanore. They introduced us to Kissandra Newmesty, a road-wearied woman dressed as a soldier and the daughter of Tarion Numesty. Tarion had been the commander of a garrison of Drelev’s, but had discovered his plans to ally with Armag. When Tarion defied his orders to proceed with the alliance, he was jailed and Kissandra’s sister was taken hostage by Armag. Kissandra told us that Drelev had surrendered to the Tiger Lord barbarians and the Lord of Pitaro. His kingdom is now patrolled at night by hill giants. He launched the attack on Tazlford in an attempt to impress the Tiger Lords and Pitaro, as the Lord of Pitaro had demanded three daughters of Drelev’s best warriors as captives until Drelev proved his worth.

Also, the boggards of M’botu have been blocking trade routes. The boggard Garuum told us that he is still angry with the boggard tribe and that he’ll give us a magical bug if we kill the boggard priest king Supoko and bring Garuum his head. Supoko is being controlled by a strange charm cast by a creature to the north, who is presumably using him to control the boggard tribe.

We used what time we could to create fortifications and traps around Tazlford. Later that day, we were attacked by armies of barbarians, trolls, and bandits. We were able to fight off the main forces, but a force of trolls led by a human named Amion managed to breach the walls. Tal subdued the trolls with a dazing fireball, while Larken captured Amion with his roc.

Taking control of Varnhold

After our wonderful adventure dealing with the Lich’s traps, we grabbed the ahuozautl and eel bodies and attempted to signal the Wyverns for our established food for flight trading program. Luckily they noticed our fire and quickly agreed to the trade. We put Xanathe in the portable hole with a iridescent spindle Ioun stone. (Ring of sustenance doesn’t give you air, we would have crafted this)

  • Iridescent Spindle (Ioun Stone) (-9000 gp)

The Wyverns flew us to the dragon lair where we found the bones of Anvarion the silver dragon who had been slain by the acid breath of the black dragon Ilthiliak. On the ground we found enough scales to make two suits of black dragon armor and one suit of silver dragon armor. We signaled Pierlarius, the silver dragon, to come and see his brother’s tomb. We gave him a black dragon scale so he could divine the location of his brother’s killer. He left us the summoning stone and told us to call on him if we greatly needed assistance.

  • Scales for 2 medium Black dragon armor suits
  • Scales for 1 medium Silver dragon armor suit

At this point we had the Wyverns drop us off at the expedition camp where we met Xi and the centaur guards and picked up our horses. We told them we had news of Xanathe. With Xanathe not being present they all assumed the worst. We made our way to the centaur camp and told our harrowing tale of defeating Vordaki. At the climax of the story, which we implied that Xanathe was going to be killed by Vordaki, we released Xanathe from the portable hole. The camp let out a cheer and an impromptu festival was thrown on the spot. Aecora Silverfire agreed that the Nomen tribes would be at peace with Zaith and they would form an alliance with the kingdom of Aneron.

  • +2 Stability to our kingdom

The morning after the feast we left to release the Varnholders from the soul jars. We contacted the villagers one at a time and dashed their jars against the tavern wall. The villagers were happy to be free but saddened by the loss of their leadership and fellow villagers. We immediately gave back all the goods recovered from the spriggans to help the recovery of the town. We kept the sword of Varn as the owner was dead. The Varnholders quickly organized a council and made on offer to join our kingdom. We graciously accepted.

  • Gain Varnhold hex and two hexes around it (9 farms)
  • Buildings: Brewery, Extoic Craftsman, Garrison, Granary, Inn, Smith, Tannery, Temple, 3 Tradesman, 8 Houses
  • lost Varnhold goods

Nivakta’s Crossing was our next itinerary where some people told us they wanted various reagents from the south. We stumbled across a wanted poster for manticore quills requested by Iosis
Vemarelian. The centaurs told us they had cleared manticores out of their burial grounds so we just needed to swing by and pick them up.

Beven Armaki, the tavern keep, wanted us to find some silver eels that were located in Silverstep lake so he could have an eel bake off.

Chamaie Lerian, a weaver, wanted us to gather 50 yards spider silk for a special project from trap door spiders to the south. We had knowledge of a den of them just to the north east of Varnhold.

Tal left us at this juncture to return home to our capital and get a hold on what had been happening in out absence. He took with him Torvald’s ring to give back to his brother Edrist and bring news of his untimely demise.

  • +3000gp for return of ring

We went up to Zaith to inform them of the treaty with the Nomen. The swordlords were pleased and gave us a reward

  • +4000gp for Nomen Treaty

Irvin Renwald was dropped off at his academy and offered to buy back his viola and books. We agreed.

  • lost mwk viola
  • lost books of Iobarian knowledge
  • +2500gp
  • Wand of find traps 50/50

We then journeyed south to make a loop around the unexplored areas of the territory surrounding Varnhold. We came across a bridge made of webs that lead to a dead end ridge. Obviously a trap, we sent Hawk to light step to the other side to see if he could discern anything. As soon as he was across, we were ambushed by three ettercaps, three giant spider and two clawbats. They were quickly dispatched. We found the body of a dead dwarf and a trapped chest that Hawk disarmed.

  • +2 warhammer (4156gp) sold
  • 435gp 1080sp in chest
  • concentrated ettercap poison DC20 fort, 2 saves to succeed 1d6 dex damage, 10 rnds (Hawk)

We then headed to see if we could get a Roc egg for the omelet king. We spied a tower high on the mountain peak and began climbing towards it. On the final approach Liliana cast levitate on everyone and then they all tied themselves off to Hawk with three ropes braided together. The Roc must have been watching as it swooped down suddenly and grabbed Hawk, and by the transitive property, the entire party.

Larken and Verrak quickly drank their potions of enlarge person that they had out for just such an occasion. Hawk quickly tied off the rope to the Roc’s leg and thus sealed it’s fate. The Roc tore into Hawk and Verrak but could not do enough to stop the two large fighters savaging it’s underbelly and the dancing ninja light stepping across its legs. The Roc fell to the ground as the party cut itself free and floated in midair. The then floated to the tower where they found 3 eggs. They were unfortunately unfertilized, but we took them all and placed them in the portable hole. We sent our silver Raven out to summon the wyverns for the feast at the summit of Talon peak.

Hawk went off to cut the Roc’s head off for our collection and was greeted by a large bear trying to eat our trophy. Hawk went invisible and stabbled it to death. The wyverns appeared and brought the bear up to the tower so we could make stew. The wyverns ate and agreed to take us over the mountains to silverstep lake. We sent our silver raven off to Varnhold for the villagers to come get our horses in the morning.

The wyverns dropped us off at the lake where we were approached by Blodeuwedd, a fey like creature of the plains. She appeared before us and questioned our presence in the area. We told her we were here to catch the silver eels and wanted to know of any happenings in the area. We had to promise that we would honor the lake and nature before she would render us aid. We agreed and after finding out we were the rulers of Aneron, she said she would give protection to our subjects as long as they kept nature alive and thriving in the area. She told us of a giant man eating plant to the south, and that there was a phase spider somewhere near the ghost stone. She also informed us that she had seen an area of gems to the south called the whispering grotto. She also informed us that the silver eels liked good berries and used her druid like powers to summon a copse of them. We spent the day fishing and caught the eels for the tavern keeper.

We skirted the man eating plant and came to an area of the whispering grotto and saw the gems for ourselves. This area is ripe for a mining operation.

We headed off to the ghost stone and on the way a voice called out in Aklo from a copse of trees that it needed our help. Luckily, Hawk spoke Aklo and was able to translate for the rest of the party. Having knowledge of the phase spider, we asked it to reveal itself. The phase spider introduced herself as Zzamas and told us that some Xill had used the ghost stone to come to our plane. The ghost stone had once been a portal to the ethereal realm, and it’s physical structure was a permanent emplacement on the mercurial ethereal plane. It also had the side effect of weakening the barriers between the prime material and the other planes (A theme it seems) and allowed the Xill to come over. Zzamas told us of the plight of the Xill on her race and that she was trapped here until the were driven off. She mentioned she had overheard the Xill speaking of a summons from Vordaki, and that the five that were already there were a vangaurd of a larger force. She promised to give us a chest she had buried if we destroyed the Xill. Liliana agreed as she would have erradicated the Evil outsiders from her future realm as a matter of course. We buffed and approached the encampment and engaged them in melee. The four armed insectoids were fierce fighters but could not match the fury of Liliana’s three cold-hearted killers. During the battle a Xorn came through the ghost stone and attacked. Most of the Xill were down by then and the Xorn was not much help for our adversaries. The last Xill ran through the ghost stone but Zzamas jumped through after at the behest of Liliana and finished it off. The Xorn was full of gems and a vein of silver. Zzamas thanked us for our help and showed us the location of the chest and also informed us of a cave with iron to the south. We noted it on our map and then tried to get into the chest. It took Hawk a a few tries but we eventually broke into the chest.

  • Silver vein 3000gp sold
  • x5 steel shields (27.5gp) sold
  • x10 long bows (375gp) sold
  • x10 short swords (50gp) sold

We then made our way to the spider dens and were jumped by six trap door spiders. While Larken was having a flashback,Verraks extended reach made the spider’s attacks ill advised as they were skewered before they could even get into range. They were quickly dispatched and the silk harvested for the weaver.

  • 1200gp found in the webs
  • 50 yards of spider silk
  • cloak of elvenkind (1250gp) sold
  • boots of elvenkind (1250gp) sold

We stopped by the burial mounds and gathered up sufficient quills to satisfy the poet back in Zaith.

We returned to Zaith and turned over all the ingredients to their respective recipients.

The omelet king is convinced to hold his omelet cooking competion in the kingdom of Aneron. This brings a huge burst of activity and tourism that the tax coffers are overflowing.

The Iobarians notes and scribings are brought to Tamerak Elenark and he rewarded us with a headband of Wisdom +2. We let him snort a pinch of lich dust on a lark and the bookworm able to actually gain the interest of a bar wench. There was obviously dark magic at work

The eels are given to the tavernkeep and we are given a free entry into the eel cook off. Hawk is allowed to compete and makes a strange concoction of cooked eel wrapped in vinegar rice, seaweed and covered in a brown liquid with a green root in it. It is universally panned as being too salty and spicy. We still gained a +2 buckler for bringing in the eels.

With the delivery of his quills, Iosis is ecstatic and gleeful that he can start his epic. He shoved a book of halfling poetry at us before running around in circles spouting Iambic pentameter. Larken was going to use it as toilet paper, the only truly fitting use for halfling poetry, but Hawk recognized it as a particular rare work of halfing art detailing the historical signifance of second breakfast on the third age of halfling kind. After shopping it around, Nugrah came and offered us 3000gp for the work. We weren’t surprised.

Chamaie was delivered her silk and gave us all a kiss on the cheek. We spent the night in town and when we awoke we saw her sneaking out of Larken’s room. When we were later leaving town, Larken discovered a +2 cloak of resistance in his saddle bag while he was searching for bear jerky.

Vorakai Cleanup

Xanathe told us that a dread cyclops zombie had been giving her water periodically while she was imprisoned. She said that she broke her bribe’s taboos to explore the Valley of the Dead and then was paralyzed by Vordakai. He told her that she should be honored to be his guest and that he’d return to her after fear had driven her to despair.

Loot:

  • Occulus of Abbandon, a minor artifact rumored to be crafted by one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (or, more likely, by some pre-Earthfall race); grants darkvision 120 ft, true seeing 1/day, greater scrying 3/day, haunting beacon that functions as mass charm monster within a 1 mile range, telepathic link to all minds in the area, and familiar shared-sight; it can be destroyed by smashing it with a bludgeoning holy weapon wielded by a permanently blinded person or by a CL7+ good outsider with a blundgeoning weapon
  • +3 cloak of resistance (Liliana)
  • sell Liliana’s +2 cloak of resistance
  • +2 INT/CHA headband (knowledge (planes))
  • +2 ring of protection
  • phylactery (3500 gp)
  • Vordakai’s head

Tal was compelled to put the occulus in his empty eye socket. He got a telepathic message from the spirit of Vordakai, offering him a treasure trove if he would help Vordakai survive. That night, Tal had a dream about seeing a walking giant, and then dancing through a hynotic pattern. Through it, he saw a ghost on a throne in the center of a mandala. The ghost looked at Tal, and then he awoke.

While exploring the rest of Vordakai’s tomb, we found a shrine to Caron, the horseman of the apocalypse responsible for ferrying the deceased across the river of the dead. A pillar in the middle of the room shot stygian fire at us, so we fled downstairs and came to a room full of centaur statues. Despite our best caution, we triggered a trap in the room causing portcullises to fall and releasing two cyclops zombies, one of which removed a key from a statue that began to flood the room from the river above. In addition to the zombies, a giant river eel and an ahuzautl flowed in from the river and attacked.

  • -1 potion of water breathing (drunk by Liliana)
  • eel head
  • ahuozautl head

After we slew these, Verrak was able to lift the portculus and we fled, with Hawk in the rear. Hawk was attacked by a dark naga and it followed him as he retreated to us. We came to a room full of cyclops pottery and heard strange noises from a dinosaur.

  • dinosaur (elasmosaurus) head
  • naga head

We came to a beach where Xanathe had come in. We found the calcified remains of an adventurer there:

  • ring of freedom of movement (Verrak)
  • figurine of wondrous power, silver raven (1900 gp, but I’d suggest keeping it)
  • amphora with 689 gp imprinted with the image of an all-seeing eye and clenched fist
  • jade bracelet (200 gp)

We climbed/levitated up the cliff to return to the upper entrance. We found some frescoes detailing ancient centaur culture.

  • transcription of the centaur frescoes

Returning to the tomb, we found the soul jars.

  • 42 soul jars, including one for Ervil Pendrod
  • portable hole (empty)

Vordakai’s treasure pile consisted of:

  • 1,140 pp
  • 13,000 gp
  • 103,000 sp

Vordakai, Part Deux
Or, Ding Dong, the Lich is Dead...er

The room which Vordakai fled had an overwhelming aura of conjuration and divination magic, and a link to a demonic plane. Through a doorway on one side, we found a chamber with a pool with an aura of teleportation magic. A water elemental arose from it and attacked us, despite Tal’s quite unsuccessful attempt at an untrained diplomacy check. We also found a soul eater in the chamber and heard Vordakai call out for the assistance of “Pisco.” At the far end of the chamber, beheaded humanoids were draining blood into the pool.

Tal heard a suffering female voice, belonging to the missing centaur Xanathe, telling him to get the magic flail from behind the altar and use it against Vordakai. The centaur later told Hawk that there was also a ring of freedom of movement behind the altar, which could protect us against Vordakai’s paralyzing attacks.

Hawk defeated the soul eater, but had his wisdom severely drained in the process. Vordakai paralyzed Larken, but he was saved by the unicorn. Vordakai then paralyzed Verrak, but Liliana cast break paralysis. Eventually, we retrieved the items mentioned by the centaur and the fight turned in our favor. Vordakai trapped Hawk in a soul jar and then cast dimension door to flee back to a chamber where he was keeping Xanathe, whom he planned to sacrifice to regain his power. We managed to get Xanathe away from Vordakai and were about to defeat him when he released Hawk from the soul jar. Hawk, it turned out, had been communicating telepathically with Vordakai while trapped in the jar. Their conversation went as follows:

HAWK: So, all those thousands of years of ‘life’ drawing to an end, eh?
VORDAKAI: You fool, you will be a valuable asset in the war to come!
H: Ah, so who will will be fighting in this war to come and how can I assist in your grand plot. (Bluff check: 30)
V: First, we shall combine our kingdoms and then rise an undead centaur horde to crush Zaith and Shadow Vale.
H: And what of the evil fey queen who has her eyes on the Stolen Lands? Are we allied with her? Or will she perish with the rest?
V: The meddling fey will be vanished. I know her secrets. I know what she truly seeks.
H: Would what she truly seeks aid our cause as well? Would it be wise for us to claim this for our own cause?
V: She is the cgvinlut (?) of a goddess on the Astral plane, but she was stripped of her power, her heart — ztpgicpte (?) — it was stored and hidden in a thorn blade… and together we shall find it and make her our servant.
H: So, without her heart, she’s just a nameless astral goddess? When you slay my ex-comrades, where shall we go to claim her heart and bend her to your will?
V: Her Thorn is hidden in the western Stolen Lands. Together we shall find it. It is in a notunl (?) place, hidden by the higher gods that bound her and allied against her. They hid it here thousands of years ago, even before my time.
H: Long ago indeed to be beyond your power. Does the fey “goddess” have a name? And if she were to get her Thorn before we were able to get it, what will her intentions be? And lastly, do you know why the higher gods that allied against her removed her heart in the first place, with your indefinite knowledge?
V: You see the centaur, Xannathe, lying on the floor. “Now we will tend to this anti-paladin.” [At this point, the lich draws a ceremonial dagger and places it over the centaur.
H: Her life will lead to the end of many others…
V: Shut up, my slave! Oh no! They used the occulus chamber!
H: Order them to stand down on the life and Xanathe and mine!
V: If you defeat me, Nyrissa will discover BRIAR, the thornblade, long before you know it, and the whole world will be in dire danger. You must stop them now! I release you!

Upon his release, Hawk told us not to kill Vordakai, as he had knowledge of the evil fey Nyrissa and how to defeat her. Liliana recognized the name: Nyrissa became the lover of an Eldest, quickly gaining power and becoming and Eldest herself. But, the others stopped her and stripped her of her power to love. Liliana prayed to Kalen, who told her that nothing good would come of an alliance with the lich and that the same knowledge could be found in his ancient books. So, Liliana blasted Vordakai with positive energy and Verrak and Larken finished him off. As he died, he said “Nyrissa will find the Thornblade Briar and continue her domination of the world!”

State of the party is unchanged from last time.

Vordakai
Or, our resources are further depleted and then Verrak basically solos Vordakai

The wyverns tell us that the found tracks from a centaur, which we surmise likely were made by the missing centaur, Xannath. We asked them to fly us to the upper entrance of Vordakai’s tomb, a stone cairn with an ancient aura of preservative magic protecting it against erosion. The upper door was magically locked, but Verrak was able to spell sunder it open.

The passageway leading into the tomb was lined by ancient bas-relief artwork of the ancient centaurs and led to an empty chamber. Liliana smelt tar from one of the walls. Hawk noticed that one of the bas-reliefs showed two cyclops in wrestling stances, which led us to mimic the posture on two diases in the chamber. From this vantage point, we noticed an odd stone at a cyclops’ eye level. Pressing it showed us the outline of a door, and behind it a tar pit.

Hawk attempted to climb across a wall on the edge of a pit when a zombie flew out and cast a fireball at us. It was the Varnholdian wizard, Cephal. During the battle, other zombies came in through a secret door behind us. After we dispatched them, a lava elemental arose and we killed it as well.

Loot:

  • +1 dagger (2,302 gp)
  • +2 ring of protection (Larken)
  • spell component pouch (5 gp)
  • spellbook with all 0 level spells, fire shield, fireball, acid arrow, glitterdust, mirror image, scorching ray, burning hands, mage armor, magic missile, and shield

Proceeding onward, we came to a room with corpses seated around a table, with their brains removed. We saw dread zombies eating them and the spectre of Willas Gunderson flew through a door. We killed them.

Loot:

  • 4 mwk greataxes (310 gp each)

The body at the head of the table was Megar Varn. We also found the body of the cleric Caspar Morgarian. We suspect that Vordakai ate the corpses ritualistically in an attempt to gain their memories. Verrak ascended to the next level and found a glowing octagonal chamber with an eye-shaped dome and images of cyclopses. Vordakai was in the center. When the rest of us realized what was happening, we rushed to join the battle, but Verrak was able to force Vordakai to flee (by teleporting) at about the time that we arrived. Through arcane eye we learned that Vordakai had an occulus granting true seeing, the spells shield and mage armor, a ring with a +2 deflection bonus, and a headband increasing his INT and CHA.

Entering the Valley of the Dead
Or, I'm disappointed that my spell-checker doesn't know the word 'stele.'

We entered the Valley of the Dead and found warnings erected by the Nomen. In the Valley, we found grave stones and a badly weathered 10 ft tall stele with strange ruins written in cyclopean, which we surmised contained a list of ancient names. Some of the graves had been disturbed. A giant undead cyclops ran out at us, chanting that we must wish to join it in death. A second one emerged from behind a stele. We sent them back to death.

Loot:

  • 2 mwk battleaxes (large) (310 gp each)

Deeper in the Valley, we came upon an eight-mile long staircase. While we were climbing it, a soul eater flew over the wall lining the stair and attacked Liliana. We surmised that it had been summoned to the material plane by Vordakai in order to neutralize the one he saw as the biggest threat. When it was defeated, it left a symbol of a rune of Abbadon.

Further up the stair, we were attacked by three hungry wyverns. After a prolonged battle, Liliana offered the wyverns a truce and they agreed if we would heal their dying leader. We did, and offered them 100 lbs of mastodon meat from our bag of holding. In exchange, they agreed to let us stay in their cave for the night and flew us to it. Their leader is called Relicor. They live in the bluffs overlooking the lake in which Vordakai’s tomb is situated. They also offered us a backpack with:

  • complete set of Ustlavic silverware (75 gp)
  • pouch with 57 gp
  • +3 greatsword with Zaith’s coat of arms
  • messanger’s parcel with 5 spinnels (100 gp each)

They mentioned that an ancient dragon lair lies to the southeast. Relicor’s father once went there and saw an incomplete set of bones melted by acid, missing the skull.

We meet the Nomen and capture the raven
Or, introducing Xi

We headed east towards the centaurs.

Meanwhile, the human monk Xi lived with the centaurs. He saw a raven flying strangely. The queen of the centaurs referred to it as Horagnoman. Xi spotted us coming from the west when he was tracking the raven. He met us, but decided to talk to the centaurs before inviting us to come to them. After gaining their assent, we headed in.

The centaurs were performing a ritual dance honoring “mother moon,” a form of Calen. The leader told us that they were not allies of Varnhold, but were still concerned about the vanishing as they feared that the same thing could happen to them. We told her that we had determined that the necromancer Vordakai had put the people of Varnhold into sould jars. They recognized the name as belonging to an evil arising from the south, that they were responsible for containing. Vordakai was a slumbering warlord from the times of the mother tribes, last heard of in the dragon age 200 years back. We can go to Ollaconcactet, the “Valley of the Dead,” to learn more. Recently, a centaur huntress saw a strange lumbering shape there. The tomb of Vardakai is in the Valley, with a stair that leads up the mountains. We can follow the river to a waterfall, and then find the tomb on an island. She told Xi that she feared for her daughter Xananth, a friend of Xi and the one had seen the strange lumbering shape. She went missing after her mother was unable to tell her anything about the shape. She saw Skybolt on Larken and asked about it. It had been Xananth’s bow. Xananth had broken taboo by going to the Valley and she wanted us to search for her, offering us the bow as a gift for rescuing her daughter. We returned the centaur hides that we had found in the village (for burial) and said that we had determined (via blood biography) that they had been killed by the spriggans.

The leader of the centaurs told us that there were manticores in the burial grounds to the north, as well as Kankorata, the “earth mover,” that left big holes in the earth when it moved. The centaurs gave Hawk a gift.

  • mwk light crossbow (Hawk)

We offered to scry on the daughter, and found her slumped in the east corner of a prison chamber, chained to the wall. It had similar architecture to what we had scryed previously.

We headed north to the Blood Furrows in search of the Kankorata, which we identified as a bulette. Hawk found recent tracks and it then leapt ouf of the ground, knocking out Tal and stunning Liliana. Xi killed it. When we returned, the centaur matriarch gave us:

  • 6 potions of cure moderate wounds (1 for each of us except Liliana, 1 in party loot)
  • 6 potions of lesser restoration (1 for each of us except Liliana, 1 in party loot)

We went south and found an ancient linnorm skeletal head surrounded by herds of animals. The centaurs told us that this was unusual behavior for the herds. Andarus flew over and noticed an ancient stone with the raven on it at the center of the area. A purplish magical aura flowed out from the raven with an enchantment aura. Hawk turned invisible and went to investigate, climbing up a rib bone of the skeleton. He approached the raven. It saw him despite his invisibility, but he was able to catch it and stuff it in the bag of holding. The bulls in the herd of mastodons then went mad, forcing us to kill them.

We returned to the centaur village to interrogate the raven. Via detect thoughts, we found that it had the intelligence of 10 (suggesting that Vordaki is level 9 or 10) and seemed to be a channel for the thoughts of another. Via detect magic, we sensed an overwhelming aura of conjuration, divination, and necromancy and had a vision of an eye, which a centaur druid identified as the Occulus of Abbadon, which granted dark vision, true seeing, and greater scry three times per day. We cast detect scrying and found that Vordakai was scrying on us. He was a large cyclops and we were able to pinpoint his location. In response, he cast a fireball through his familiar, causing the bird to heat up and explode.
